  The community outreach unit houses programs undertaken by OCCR to fulfill one of the primary goals of Rutgers-Newark’s Provost Steven Diner: to strengthen ties between the campus and the Newark community. Two major initiatives within this unit are the America Reads/America Counts tutorial program and the College Tutors Partnership Program. Other initiatives include NIDA and the Rutgers-Prudential Future Business Computer Institute.

Administered by OCCR, the Rutgers-Newark America Reads/America Counts Program serves youth and adults in Newark. In partnership with the Newark Literacy Campaign and Rutgers’ Office of Financial Aid/Student Employment, the America Reads Program has become a positive addition to the community it serves. The program enriches tutee's lives by providing academic tutorial support in the areas of math and reading.

Requirements for becoming an America Reads/America Counts tutor:

  • Must be enrolled currently at Rutgers-Newark
  • Must have work-study eligibility
  • Must be interested in and dedicated to tutoring in the areas of reading and math
  • Previous tutoring experience is not necessary

The College Tutors Partnership Program (CTPP) is a university-community outreach project involving Rutgers-Newark and the Newark Public Schools.Managed by OCCR, CTPP has been created for three main purposes:

  • To provide Rutgers University students with the opportunity to enhance their education with practical work experience and community service;
  • To provide an opportunity for the Newark Public Schools to utilize the services of Rutgers University students as tutors under the parameters of the CTPP; and
  • To enhance the educational opportunities for both Rutgers University and the Newark Public Schools

Students interested in working as a tutor in English or Math should:

  • Complete a Tutor Application Form and sign a Tutor Agreement.
  • Have a strong GPA (cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above).
  • Have earned A’s or high B’s in the courses they want to tutor.

The Future Business Computer Institute (FBCI) is a two-week summer program intended to expose and successfully train students in the growing industry of computer technology. The Future Business Computer Institute is funded by Prudential and supported by Academic Foundations and OCCR. The hands-on curriculum helps students to develop new and advanced existing computer technological skills. The Institute has a long and distinguished history of thirty-five consecutives summers of operation from 1970 to the present.
